Do I need a New Zealand Visa to go to New Zealand
Before you leave to travel to New Zealand please ensure that:
- Your Passport is valid for at least 3 months after your planned departure date from New Zealand
- Your Passport has any visas or permits that are required
From Australia
Do you need a New Zealand Visa or permit if you come from Australia?
If you are an Australian Citizen with an Australian Passport or a Australian Resident Visa holder you will not need a New Zealand Visa to visit New Zealand.
Australian Citizens or Permanent Residents (without criminal convictions) can visit New Zealand, work in New Zealand, or study in New Zealand indefinitely.
From United States
Do you need a New Zealand Visa or permit if you come from United States?
New Zealand has a visa waiver agreement with the USA.
If you have a USA passport you do not need New Zealand Visa for entering New Zealand for up to 3 months.
You will still require
- Travel Tickets or evidence that shows your arrangements for onward travel
- Evidence that you can financially support yourself while in New Zealand (you will need approximately NZ$1000 per month per person)
If staying for longer than 3 months.
You will need a Visitor Visa if you plan to stay longer than 3 months in New Zealand.

From Canada
Do you need a New Zealand Visa or permit if you come from Canada?Canada has a Visa waiver agreement with New Zealand.
If you hold a Canadian passport you can enter New Zealand for up to 3 months.
You will still require
- Travel Tickets or evidence that shows your arrangements for onward travel
- Evidence that you can financially support yourself while in New Zealand (you will need approximately NZ$1000 per month per person).
- From Jan2008 a Canadian passport holder without a criminal record can transit through the United States to New Zealand. Check beforehand with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security / Customs and Border Protection (DHS/CBP)
From United Kingdom
Do you need a New Zealand Visa or permit if you come from the UK?If you are a British passport holder you do not need a New Zealand Visa for a stay in New Zealand of up to 6 months.
Ireland has a visa waiver agreement with New Zealand. So if you are an Irish passport holder you do not need a New Zealand Visa for up to a 3 month stay
You will still need to
- Show evidence of your onward travel arrangements
- Evidence that you can financially support yourself while in New Zealand (you will need approximately NZ$1000 per month per person)
From India
Do you need a New Zealand Visa or permit if you come from India?All Indian Passport holders require a New Zealand Visa to enter New Zealand.
The New Zealand High Commission in New Delhi deals with all New Zealand Visas for migration, visitors, work, student visas. There are also offices in Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chandigarh, Cochin, Ahmedabad, and Kolkatta. The offices are run by a company called T.T Services who are contracted to NZIS to do the Visa paperwork. All New Zealand Visa applications need to be sent to T.T Services Offices who will then forward them onto the High Commission for processing.

Before you start the process of applying for residence, you need to ensure you meet these requirements:
- Are healthy – each member of your family coming to New Zealand will need a doctors complete medical and chest X-ray certificates
- Good character – every applicant aged 17 yrs and over will need a police certificate as evidence of good character included in their application
- High Standard of English – everyone aged 16yrs and over needs to be able to read, write, and speak English to a very high standard This is measured using the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).
